He’s been called the uncle of the nation, the ‘curve-crusher’ and even had T-shirts adorned with his face.

Now the Director-General of Health, Dr Ashley Bloomfield, has been turned into a delicious gelato concoction by those very clever folk at Rollickin' Gelato.

Yes, not only have they tongue-in-cheek (or not) dubbed Dr Bloomfield “New Zealand’s sexiest man”, but have named one of its lockdown creations after the public servant who has narrated our daily Covid-19 updates.

The 'Ashley Apple Bloomfield' comes with a cheeky baked apple pie, a scoop of your preferred gelato, covered with some sweet biscuit crumbles, slathered in caramel sauce and topped off with vanilla cream and cinnamon dust.

Of course, you can’t have an Ashley without a Jacinda. The dessert cafe's homage to Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern is called 'Jacindy’s Cinnie Buns'. A cinnamon bun with cream cheese icing, candied walnuts, caramel sauce and a sprinkling of cinnamon dust.

Rollickin' Gelato marketing assistant Ruby Greenhalgh says its chefs came up with the new recipes while in Level 4 lockdown – and we are pretty glad they did.

Both concoctions are available in store, for takeaway or available as packs, alongside the Rollickin' Pandemic Party Pack, Gerry Brownie Relief Package and the Party Tub via UberEats. Check Rollickin' Gelato out at Cashel St or New Regent St, Christchurch.

Raw goodness

So, who’s up for a vegan-friendly treat? Well, we have some good news folks. Riverside Collective, based at the Riverside Market (96 Oxford Tce, Christchurch) now have delectable goodies from The KŪKA Unbakery. They are reportedly sitting in its fridges right now, looking just as beautiful and tempting as can be. Zané Stankuna is the creator behind the plant-based items like Strawberry Cheesecake, Peanut Butter Cheesecake and Carrot Cake with Cream Cheese Frosting. Don’t mind if we do indeed!

A different type of brewing

Well-known for its award-winning craft brews like the Oyster Stout, Three Boys Brewery (592 Ferry Rd, Woolston) is offering up something a little bit different. It has brewed up some kombucha made with wild strawberries. We reckon its non-alcoholic fermented tea could be something a bit special,

Not to be outdone, Cassels Brewing Co. has a limited-release ready for your rigger. The Cassels Sweet Dreams Red Ale reportedly has a “pleasant depth of malt character with residual sweetness” from the addition of lactose. Pass the rigger please.
